One Man and his Dog

Here in Manchester we are getting an unusually cold winter. Temperatures are getting as low as -4 in urban areas and where I keep my horse -7.. and this is during the day! Last night I went to the supermarket to buy some fat balls for the birds (I have starlings and little finches along with robins visit my garden, they are beautiful).

There was a homeless man sitting outside with his dog and I couldn't help feel this overwhelming sadness that people and animals are subjected to the elements, and live out in these conditions, but of course they do. Wrapped in a blanket both of them, I decided to buy some food for him and his dog.

I asked in the supermarket if the corporation donate food to the homeless, and their answer was no, because the big bosses don't want to encourage them! I cannot believe charity exists so little in peoples conscious mind.. where is the humanity? We cannot help every animal and human, but good deeds go a long way in helping both the victim and the person performing the good deed.

I cried a little handing the food to the man, I stroked his dog, who, for the safety of the people was muzzled. My heart bled out for this both sad and angry dog who obviously spent most of his life in a muzzle, he was obviously well fed, but his circumstances had made him aggressive and he did try and attack me. But, his fate was because the man yearned for company, which is fully understandable. I can't help pity both their lives, and how sad and lonely it must be. Many of us, myself included, have battled with the conflict of homeless people having animals.. in this article they talk of a possible solution to help more homeless people and animals. Its no surprise that many many animals are homeless and are destined to be put to sleep, (kill shelters in the US) and its also no surprise that those people on the streets are truly devoted to their companions. This write up I came across is a truly wonderful initiative , pay the homeless to care for those animals who don't have such a bright future, give each the opportunity to feel a connection between man and beast. What a wonderful idea, if only it could be executed...

I just wish that corporations would do more. I did hear today that in my local town they had opened up a safe house for the homeless, I just hope those two were able to get there, and have a warm and comfortable rest.

Many of us are so fortunate. Every day I am grateful for everything I have. Warmth, food, beautiful animals whom I love with all my heart and people who care and love me, and whom I care and love back.
